Washington, DC – Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) voted, along with his fellow Republicans, to not adjourn Congress for its August recess until Congress addresses the issue of comprehensive energy reform. Only 17 Democrats voted to address comprehensive energy reform prior to adjournment.
Congressman Akin issued the following statement:
“I have heard from over 3,000 constituents this summer who want Congress to pass meaningful legislation to address the high cost of energy.
“A vast majority of my constituents also understand that to ensure the availability of affordable energy, America must develop domestic energy. This needs to be done by developing newer technologies and exploiting the abundance of natural resources here at home.
“The fact is that since I have been in Congress, the problem of developing American energy is one of the most partisan issues I have ever encountered, with the vast majority of Democrats consistently opposing the development of American Energy and a vast of majority of Republican’s supporting it.
“With gas prices having hit historic levels this summer, it is time to put partisanship behind us and to act in the interest of all Americans.
“I have introduced my bill to lift restrictions on the development of American energy, and today I have voted not to adjourn until Congress addresses comprehensive energy reform.”
